Istanbul Day 2: Grand Bazaar and Spice Market

The next day we slept in and enjoyed another breakfast on the roof of our hostel. Then we headed to the Grand Bazaar - the model for our present day malls, merchants would gather to sell their goods in the same covered facility that stands today. While much of the bazaar has been over run by souvenir shops and vendors selling knock off purses/clothes and it is all pretty overwhelming......if you are able to wade through the junk there are some true Turkish jewels! Our guidebook brought us to a small cove down one of the halls lined by pawn shops and frequented by locals. It is here that we spent most of our day admiring handmade jewelry ( we visited the workshop just above the stor - very cool!) and gorgeous traditional hand made wedding dowry Turkish rugs (wool on wool with natural dyes) while we sipped apple tea. What a fabulous way to spend the day!

After prying ourselves from the beautiful merchandise we had another late lunch - doner (shaved meat) with a delicious sauce and yogurt - and headed off to the spice market. What an experience! Shops filled with bins of spices, apricots and other dried fruits, teas, nuts, and Turkish delights ( a gummy sweet covered in powdered sugar). Taste testing was encouraged
so we enjoyed A LOT of goodies and left with full tummys!
